Born in Guelph, Ont., Tim Campbell began his journalism career in 1981 at the Guelph Daily Mercury, where he spent six years covering sports, especially junior hockey.

In 1987, he moved to Winnipeg to join the Winnipeg Free Press, where he would go on to spend nearly three decades and become a foundational figure in the sports department.

From 1987-96, Campbell was the lead writer on the Winnipeg Jets beat, covering the team through some of its most pivotal years. When the franchise left the city, he continued coverage of hockey, especially the Manitoba Moose and the National Hockey League, but his focus broadened to include other sports such as golf and he continued to deliver thoughtful and well-crafted stories.

In 2011, he was awarded first place in the Golf Journalists Association of Canada Newspaper–Editorial category for his column on Julie Inkster and received a second-place nod for a feature on local golf pro Derek Ingram.

Covering the 2003 Masters Tournament, where Canadian golfer Mike Weir captured a historic win, was one of the most meaningful moments in Campbell’s sportswriting career. Not only was it the first time a male Canadian had won a major championship, but Campbell had a personal connection to Weir, having co-authored a book with him two years earlier.

“To have been present when he pulled off the win was a really cool experience,” Campbell said.

The return of the Winnipeg Jets in 2011 brought Campbell full circle.

“To go from the desolation and the disappointment of 1996 to the community elation of 2011, I think I'm always going to look back at that as a miraculous thing that I got to witness in my career,” he said.

Campbell left the Free Press in 2016 to join NHL.com, covering western Canadian NHL teams until his retirement from sportswriting in 2022.

Looking back on his long and celebrated career, Campbell expressed gratitude for the people he met and the moments he witnessed.

“I’d say I’ve been very blessed over all my years. I am very honoured and humbled to be recognized for the hall of fame by my peers.”

Tim Campbell was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2012.
