Ted Wyman was a longtime Canadian sports journalist best known for his work with the Winnipeg Sun, his national coverage through Postmedia and his friendly nature.

His career spanned more than 30 years and included a wide range of assignments, from local amateur sports to international championship events.

Wyman was born in Brandon on June 11, 1966, and raised in Winnipeg. He returned to Brandon in 1992 to begin his career at the Brandon Sun. He left to join the Moose Jaw Times-Herald, where he worked from 1993-96, then returned to the Brandon newspaper. He stayed there for seven years until becoming a sports copy editor at the Winnipeg Sun in 2003.

Wyman rose to become the Sun’s sports editor three years later and continued writing, becoming known for his clarity, organization and ability to connect with readers. He covered numerous Grey Cup games, national and world curling championships and several Olympic Games. He wrote extensively on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Jets, offering readers thoughtful analysis and balanced reporting throughout each season.

In addition to his local work, Wyman played a national role as a senior writer for Postmedia, regularly contributing to its national curling and football coverage. He reported from major events across Canada and internationally, and his byline is familiar to readers from coast to coast. Wyman also wrote the book Ice Gold, which gave readers insight into Canada’s double gold-medal curling feat – won by Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones and Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs -- at the 2014 Olympic Games that he covered.

CurlManitoba awarded Wyman a prestigious Honourary Life Membership in 2024 to recognize his support of the game. CurlingCanada bestowed the Paul McLean Award that honours a media person who has made a lasting contribution behind the scenes to the betterment of the sport, posthumously in 2025.

Beyond the newsroom, Wyman was known as a supportive editor, a steady mentor to young journalists and a contributor to the broader Canadian sportswriting community. He was rarely seen without a smile on his face and enjoyed the camaraderie with his fellow journalists at home and across the country. He was a past president of the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and was the driving force behind establishing the digital display of all past winners of the MSSA’s Media Roll of Honour that now has a permanent home in the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Wyman passed away from cancer on Nov. 9, 2024. The Ted Wyman Memorial Scholarship to support journalism students at RRC Polytech was established in his memory.

Ted Wyman was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2018.
