Stewart MacPherson was a pioneering sports broadcaster whose voice left an enduring mark on Canadian radio and television – and overseas.
Born in Winnipeg on Oct. 29, 1908, he began his career in his hometown covering minor hockey for the Winnipeg Tribune, but soon ventured to England. He moved to London in 1936, where he became one of the BBC’s most-recognized sports commentators, earning the nickname “The Fastest Voice in Radio” and gaining a reputation for his brisk, engaging delivery on hockey broadcasts.
He was a war correspondent for the BBC and a radio commentator for entertainment shows and various sports events, including the 1948 Olympics in London.
After returning to Winnipeg, MacPherson transitioned to managerial roles with CJOB Radio and Winnipeg Enterprises Corp. He played a key role in developing Winnipeg’s mid-century TV landscape as program director for CJAY-TV from 1960-74.
MacPherson was a founding member of the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and remained a respected leader in the sports media community throughout his life.
He was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame (1986), Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt (1987) and Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame (1989).
