Ron Meyers started his career as a sportswriter for the Winnipeg Tribune, covering high school and university basketball to support himself through his university studies.
His passion and commitment to the sport led to him covering senior basketball extensively, earning him recognition as an important voice of the local basketball scene. In honour of his contributions, Ron Meyers was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
Beyond journalism, Meyers served as the longtime treasurer of the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, a role he held until his passing that demonstrated his dedication to supporting the sports media community.
Meyers’s impact was not limited to sports. He was a respected provincial court judge who played a key role in organizing Canada’s first family violence court, influenced by family violence during his childhood. His outstanding legal career was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award from the Manitoba Bar Association.
Meyers was also a passionate advocate for the arts. He loved musical theatre and actively participated in the Winnipeg Press Club’s Beer and Skits shows, as well as the Manitoba Bar Association’s annual fundraising theatre productions for the Manitoba Theatre Centre. Offstage, he contributed to the success of Rainbow Stage and served on the board of the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre.
His legacy continues through several initiatives established in his memory, including the Ron Meyers Leadership Award, presented jointly by the MSSA and Basketball Manitoba, and the Ron Meyers Memorial Scholarship for Performing Arts awarded by the Red River Exhibition Foundation.
