Robb Glazier built a career by saying yes to opportunity.
From dropping out of high school to working at hot rod shops, to returning to school and eventually attending the University of British Columbia, Glazier's path was far from conventional. While at UBC, he played on every sports team he could, setting the foundation for a lifetime in sports and broadcasting.
After a stint playing hockey in Antwerp, Belgium, Glazier spent time in northern Africa before returning to UBC to complete his education. His first job in sports was working in sales with the Vancouver Canucks, which led him to a position of handling sales and marketing with its farm team, the Seattle Totems.
Glazier had already shown a knack for broadcasting when he filled in on Totems game calls. When the team folded, he pivoted into media full-time. He became one of the original hosts of Sports Page in Vancouver in 1977 and stayed with the program until 1979.
After marrying and starting a family, Glazier transitioned to a new role as broadcaster and sales director for the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Breakers. His time in Seattle also gave him the chance to call games for the Seattle Sounders soccer team.
Glazier later moved into TV news at KTSW in Tacoma before relocating to Winnipeg in 1985. He became the radio voice of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on CFRW, a role he held until 1991. He then co-hosted a talk show on 1290 FOX and served as the station’s news director. When the station changed formats in 1999, Glazier moved to Ottawa to host the morning sports show The TEAM.
A series of health complications eventually brought his broadcasting career to a close. His speech was affected by blood infections and he retired to B.C., where he spent his final years until his passing on April 24, 2023, at age 80.
Robb Glazier was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 1998.
