When Reynolds (Reyn) Davis wasn’t enjoying a home-cooked meal with his family, sipping on a Caesar or working through his morning crossword puzzle, he was immersed in the world of sports.
Born in Mossbank, Sask., on April 12, 1943, Davis grew up on a farm, where his early love of sports only grew stronger with time.
He began his journalism career at the Moose Jaw Times-Herald and later spent five years at the Regina Leader-Post. From there, he moved to Ontario to work at the Chatham Daily News before landing at the Winnipeg Free Press in 1968, where he would spend the majority of his distinguished career.
Davis’s love of hockey took centre stage during his years covering the Winnipeg Jets, both in the World Hockey Association and National Hockey League from 1972-87. His work took him across the globe, including trips to Russia, Finland and Sweden. In addition to the Free Press, Davis contributed to major publications such as Sports Illustrated and The Hockey News.
While his professional life revolved around sports, Davis’s devotion to his family and community was equally important. He coached his children’s baseball and fastball teams for many years, finding ways to share his passion for sport with them.
“He had me reading box scores at five years old,” said his son, Dustin. “He always had a big influence on me.”
Davis’s dedication and accomplishments earned him a respected place in the Manitoba sports community. He became an Honoured Member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995.
Even in retirement, Davis remained active. He was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, a regular at Assiniboia Downs where he owned multiple horse and a catcher in the Old Timers Fastball League for the Hillary Blues for 25 years. He also enjoyed curling and golfing with his wife, Marjorie, once even scoring a hole-in-one.
Reyn Davis was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 1993. He passed away on March 7, 2006.
