Marvin (Marv) McDonald played a key role in developing the amateur sports section of the Winnipeg Free Press, earning a reputation for his grassroots coverage and genuine approach to journalism.
 
“He had a folksy demeanor to him that was very grassroots,” said retired Free Press sports editor Steve Lyons.
 
Born in Black Diamond, Alta., in 1940 and raised in Edmonton, McDonald earned a degree in physical education from the University of Alberta. He initially taught at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology before relocating to Winnipeg in 1969, where he worked as a coach with the Cardinal Swim Club.
 
His passion for swimming eventually found a new outlet when he joined the Free Press. For more than two decades, McDonald brought attention to local amateur sports with a consistent and enthusiastic voice. He was known for his distinctive build, which reflected his swimming background, and for the relationships he built within the sports community.
 
His deep involvement in the community earned him praise beyond the newsroom. In 2014, the Manta Swim Club credited him with helping to shine a spotlight on Manitoba’s amateur swimming scene.
 
“He was famous for his patience and bonhomie,” noted the club’s newsletter.
 
Away from work, McDonald found joy at his family’s cottage at West Hawk Lake.
 
“Swatting flies, playing Scrabble or attempting the crossword, Marv was in his glory at the lake,” read his obituary in the Free Press on May 30, 2002.
 
McDonald’s legacy lives on through his contributions to local journalism and amateur sport.
 
Marv McDonald was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2001.
