Marcel Gauthier began his broadcasting journey in 1963 with the Canadian Armed Forces and put together a career that championed French culture.
He worked in sales and management roles at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain and La Liberté newspaper before returning to broadcasting with CBC/Radio-Canada in the late 1970s. During his two decades at CBC, one of his proudest achievements was his contribution to Manitoba’s French culture, notably as an announcer on the popular CBC show Ce soir.
Known affectionately as the “Morning Man” of Radio CKSB, which was the first French-speaking radio station in Canada outside Québec, Gauthier presented both sports and provincial news, becoming a familiar voice to listeners.
In 1987, Gauthier took his talents overseas to Germany, working for CBC International Radio serving the Canadian Armed Forces in Europe. After five years abroad, he returned to Canada and contributed to human resources at CBC for several years.
Beyond CBC, Gauthier was recognized as the voice of the Winnipeg Jets for several years and proudly served as the first and last bilingual announcer for the Jets. He also covered the final years of the World Hockey Association.
Away from the microphone, Gauthier enjoyed a variety of interests, including serving as master of ceremonies at Festival du Voyageur, singing in the choir Les Intrépides and indulging his passions for golf and curling.
Marcel Gauthier was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2002
