Hugh Allan was a pioneering photojournalist whose keen eye and relentless work ethic earned him widespread recognition throughout his career.

Known for his creativity and competitive spirit, Allan captured thousands of iconic moments across sports and news photography, immortalizing the energy and emotion of each event in a single frame.

Allan began his career at the Winnipeg Tribune in October 1950, where he worked for 25 years and rose to the position of chief staff photographer. His expertise spanned a wide variety of sports, from the fast-paced intensity of hockey to the graceful swing of golf to the subtle, slow rhythm of curling. Allan’s attention to detail and innovative techniques, including early adoption of panoramic shots, distinguished him as a leader in his field.

A lifelong amateur athlete himself, Allan had a deep passion for sports photography. He covered major events such as Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Jets games, as well as numerous golf tournaments. During the 1972 Summit Series, Allan brought his son, Garry, to the game in Winnipeg. While Garry hesitated and took only a handful of photos, his dad captured hundreds, later ensuring Garry’s work received equal prominence when published, an emblematic gesture of his generosity and mentorship.

Following the closure of the Tribune in 1980, Allan transitioned to a successful freelance career. He developed all his own photographs in a private darkroom and contributed to prestigious outlets such as Sports Illustrated, Maclean’s and Time magazines, Sony and the Swedish Press International.

Beyond his professional achievements, Allan was known for his lively personality, love of music and dancing, skillful spoon playing and gardening. He was a founding member of the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and was twice elected president of the Winnipeg Press Club, where he was respected for his integrity, dedication and leadership.

Hugh Allan was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 1989. He passed away on May 30, 2004, shortly after celebrating his 87th birthday.
