Harvey Rosen didn’t set out to become a sports journalist, but he left a lasting impression on the local media landscape.

Rosen was born in Portage la Prairie, Man., on Nov. 22, 1939. He moved to Winnipeg at the age of five and attended Luxton School and St. John's High School before studying at United College and the University of Manitoba.

He began his professional career as a teacher, spending 33 years in Winnipeg-area schools, where he taught English, French, social studies and consumer education. An avid sports fan, Rosen also coached baseball at the junior high level and was known for inspiring students in the classroom and on the field.

While teaching, Rosen found a second calling as a sports journalist. In 1976, he began writing a regular column, The Sporting Touch, for The Jewish Post. For over four decades, the column celebrated the accomplishments of Jewish athletes from Manitoba and around the world, becoming a unique and trusted voice in the community. His final column appeared in December 2018, capping 42 years of dedicated coverage.

Rosen also worked as a freelance reporter for Broadcast News, a division of The Canadian Press, covering the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Winnipeg Jets (WHA and NHL) and Manitoba Moose (IHL and AHL). Known for his ever-present brimmed cap and vintage tape recorder, Rosen became a fixture in press boxes across the city. He delivered his final Blue Bombers’ report during the team's inaugural season at IG Field in 2013 and signed off for the last time following a Jets-Toronto Maple Leafs game in 2017.

Recognized for his warmth, sense of humour and encyclopedic knowledge of Manitoba sports, Rosen was considered a local historian by peers and athletes alike. He also contributed to the community through his involvement in selecting young Jewish athletes for the Rady JCC Sports Dinner, and was inducted into the Rady JCC Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 2019.

Harvey Rosen was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2005. He passed away on Dec. 22, 2022, at age 83.
