Glen Dawkins is a veteran journalist whose career with the Winnipeg Sun spanned over four decades and left a lasting mark on sports reporting in Manitoba.

He began his career as a sports reporter with the Winnipeg Tribune before joining the Winnipeg Sun in 1984, where he became known for his clarity, consistency and dedication to local coverage.

At the Sun, Dawkins worked as both a reporter and copy editor, contributing to stories that covered football, hockey, soccer and amateur athletics across the province. His work was known for its clean style, accurate reporting and a deep respect for the athletes and communities he covered. His steady hand behind the scenes in editing roles helped shape the tone of the paper’s sports section for years.

In 1987, Dawkins was the recipient of the Doug Gilbert Memorial Award from Sports Federation of Canada as the top amateur sportswriter in Canada.

He covered the achievements of Manitoba athletes at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, B.C., and the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba, and was part of the Winnipeg Sun reporting team for the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg.

Dawkins was not only a strong newsroom presence, but also a community contributor. From July 1986 to February 1987, Dawkins served as the public relations committee chair for the provincial Rick Hansen Man In Motion Tour organizing committee. From 2018 until his retirement in 2024, Dawkins was deeply involved with the Christmas Cheer Board, writing twice-weekly columns during the Christmas season.

Since 2014, he has volunteered with the Winnipeg Humane Society as a dog-walker, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to service and compassion outside of journalism. He was also actively involved in his union and contributed administratively to the local media industry through his involvement with the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, where he served as president as well as assistant secretary-treasurer and was actively involved in the MSSA’s Athletes of the Year Dinner.

Quietly influential and widely respected by colleagues, Dawkins helped build and sustain a consistent voice in Winnipeg’s sports coverage for much of his professional life.

Glen Dawkins was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 1998.
