Ed Tait is one of Manitoba’s most respected sports journalists, known for his deep knowledge, balanced reporting and long-standing coverage of football and hockey in the province.

His journalism career began in 1987 with the Winnipeg Sun, where he quickly made a name for himself as a reliable and insightful reporter. After leaving for a year to be the sports columnist at the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, he returned to the Sun in 1996. Three years later, he took his talent to the Winnipeg Free Press, where he continued to cover the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Canadian Football League and the return of the National Hockey League to Winnipeg.

Tait’s work on the Bombers beat became his signature, and he covered the team through some of its most dramatic seasons, including multiple Grey Cup appearances. His style combined sharp game analysis with a strong human element, often bringing readers into the locker room or behind the scenes through careful, respectful storytelling. He was equally at home writing features, game previews and columns, and developed a loyal readership during more than three decades in the press box.

In addition to football, Tait covered the 2010 Winter Olympics and played a key role in reporting on the return of the Winnipeg Jets in 2011. His versatility and professionalism earned him national recognition. He received the Gibson’s Finest Award as the CFL’s outstanding football reporter in 2010 and was inducted into the Football Reporters of Canada section of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

In 2016, Tait joined the Blue Bombers organization as senior writer and team reporter. In this new role, he continued to deliver high-quality features, profiles and insider coverage, maintaining the trust of players, coaches and readers alike.

Ed Tait was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2009.
