Clayton Dreger is a well-known name in Manitoba’s sports broadcasting scene, particularly throughout the province’s southern communities.
With a radio career that spanned more than four decades, Dreger witnessed the industry’s evolution firsthand, beginning his work on typewriters before embracing the digital age.
He began his career at age 24 while living in Morris, Man., where he also served on the board of the Morris Curling Club. It was during this time that he met Al Friesen, who would become a key mentor. Friesen introduced him to the world of sportscasting, inspiring Dreger to take up the microphone for the first time.
Dreger became the familiar voice of sports on CFAM 950, CHSM 1250 and CJRB 1220, airing every weekday morning. His broadcast home was Golden West’s headquarters in Altona, Man. Dreger described it as his dream job. He remained in that role for the rest of his professional career.
Though Dreger had the opportunity to cover professional sports teams such as the Winnipeg Jets, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Goldeyes, his most fulfilling work came at the grassroots level. He took special pride in covering provincial high school championships, where he celebrated the achievements of local student-athletes. For Dreger, the highlight was always giving young players a voice and platform, sharing in their excitement as they won championship banners and told their stories on the airwaves.
He retired on Jan. 7, 2025, exactly 40 years after beginning his career on Jan. 7, 1985. Dreger and wife Debbie have three children: Joshua, Samuel and Hannah.
Clayton Dreger was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2011.
