Bruce Luebke’s lifelong passion for sports and broadcasting began in his hometown of Ogema, Sask., where he grew up listening to radio coverage of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Regina Pats. Those early experiences sparked an enduring interest in sportscasting that would shape the course of his professional life.

After graduating from the Prairie Broadcast Training Institute in Regina in 1991, Luebke launched his broadcasting career at CFSL Radio in Weyburn. There, he covered play-by-play for the Weyburn Red Wings of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, local senior league events and the 1992 Brier.

In 1993, Luebke moved to Brandon, Man., where he was initially hired as a reporter by sports director Darren Dreger. Within months, Luebke succeeded Dreger as sports director and became the voice of the Brandon Wheat Kings. Over the next two decades, he called nearly 2,000 games for the team, including two Western Hockey League championship runs. His coverage extended to major events such as the 1997 Canada Games and the 2010 Memorial Cup, where he conducted a notable interview with Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.

Luebke’s daily workload was extensive. He regularly delivered up to seven sportscasts each morning, covering not only hockey, but also baseball, curling, rugby and softball. His versatility and dedication led him to fill in as CKLQ’s news director, and he continued to serve as sports director from 2004-15.

His thorough reporting and civic awareness naturally transitioned into public service. After years of covering local council meetings, Luebke successfully ran for Brandon City Council in 2016.

Bruce Luebke was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2015.
