Born in Brandon, Man., Brian Swain began his broadcasting career in his hometown, providing play-by-play commentary for the Wheat Kings hockey team on CKX Radio.
In 1984, he moved to Winnipeg to become the sports director at CKND-TV. Throughout his time at CKND, Swain played a pivotal role in mentoring emerging talent. He hired Daren Millard, who would later go on to cover Olympic Games, and encouraged the early career of his daughter, Diana, who’s known for her work as host of The Investigators on CBC-TV.
Brian and Diana were the first father-and-daughter anchor team in North America. They shared the news desk for two years before Diana joined CBC, launching her own award-winning journalism career.
Known for his warmth and approachability, Swain left a lasting impression on those he worked with and the audiences he served.
“My dad had a real approachability,” said Diana. “The memorial service we held for him, the church was overflowing.”
Beyond the newsroom, Swain was an avid sportsman. He often wore curling attire beneath his anchor desk wardrobe, ready to head straight to the rink after the evening broadcast. Later in life, he developed a passion for golf, and both sports remained close to his heart.
Brian Swain was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 1997.
