Brian Marshall was born and raised in Brandon, Man., where he developed a lifelong passion for sports and storytelling.
His journalism career began in the early 1960s and spanned nearly four decades, most of it spent at the Brandon Sun, where he started as a sportswriter and eventually rose to the position of managing editor.
Marshall began his journalism career in 1961 as an unpaid part-timer. He worked as a secretary at City Hall, but spent his evenings in newsrooms. His early years included a four-year period in Winnipeg, working for both the Winnipeg Tribune and the Winnipeg Sun, where he was part of the small team that helped form the paper. However, it was his long-standing service with the Brandon Sun that defined his legacy. Over 39 years, he became one of Manitoba’s most-respected sports voices, earning the admiration of readers and colleagues alike for his thoughtful analysis and strong editorial leadership.
In addition to covering local and provincial sports, Marshall played a significant role in developing the next generation of journalists. His editorial stewardship and mentorship contributed to the Brandon Sun’s reputation as a vital source of regional sports journalism.
Marshall was also the PA announcer for both the Brandon Wheat Kings for 40 years and the Brandon University Bobcats basketball team, as well as administrator and coach at the Legion Athletic Camp for 42 years. He also started the Sun Fund for Kids and Christmas Cheer Fund.
His journalism career concluded in 2000 following a series of strokes that impacted his memory and ability to focus. Despite these challenges, his influence on Manitoba’s sports media community remains lasting and significant.
Brian Marshall was inducted into the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in 2002.
