Al Vickery, affectionately known as "Pappy," began his journalism career as a war correspondent during the Second World War, writing for The Maple Leaf, the Canadian Army newspaper. Following the war, he continued his work with The Canadian Press for 14 years, covering both news and sports, and also contributed to The Globe and Mail.
In 1960, Vickery transitioned to television, joining the newly established CJAY-TV in Winnipeg as news editor and later serving as news director. His television career continued at KCND-TV and concluded at CKND-TV.
Beyond broadcasting, Vickery was deeply engaged in the Winnipeg sports community. He maintained a strong association with the Canadian Football League for more than four decades, particularly with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was also named an honorary life member of both the Winnipeg Bowling Association and the Greater Winnipeg Five-Pin Bowling Association.
Vickery also covered curling and once served as the Manitoba Junior Hockey League commissioner.
Following his retirement from television, Vickery continued his commitment to sports journalism by writing a bowling column for the Winnipeg Free Press for 10 years.
His contributions were recognized with numerous honours, including the City of Winnipeg Community Service Award in 1981 and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Media Roll of Honour in 1998. In 1993, he also received a certificate of appreciation from the Bowling Hall of Fame of Manitoba.
